I watched what they do, they use sriracha hot sauce, and mix in some of that thai sweet chilli sauce! This is a Sri Lankan restaurant. South Indian influences, yes, but NOT South Indian.

String hoppers are a particularly Sri Lankan dish, as are the mutton rolls you've pictured. The hot sauce you've described is probably Maggi Chilli Sauce, which is available at most Asian food shops. The "aubergine masala" you've described is a staple at Sri Lankan dinner tables too. Except we just call it Aubergine curry. Dosa in the "hot sauce" is a travesty. Serving meat with dosa is something I've only ever seen in Western "curry houses". We usually only get them with vegetable dishes back home.

The mutton dish you've described looks like a "mutton pirattal". I doubt it's slow cooked. If it is then it's not something "authentic" because there just isn't the time for that in Sri Lanka. We do marinate it when there's time. Believe it or not, it's more of a drinking dish as opposed to a main course. Think finger food with an arrack and coke, over something you'd eat with rice as a full meal.

Can't help feeling short changed by your review of this Sri Lankan restaurant. It's even on the sign of the picture you took.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16356802254129018942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1588051831069283523.post-68951671207936851072013-07-18T13:04:20.588+00:002013-07-18T13:04:20.588+00:00We went on the day of this post and were very happ...We went on the day of this post and were very happy, thanks for the heads up!Shashahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05060820842775044512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1588051831069283523.post-78483375523769997412013-07-18T13:03:27.750+00:002013-07-18T13:03:27.750+00:00We went the day of this post and were not disappoi...We went the day of this post and were not disappointed :) Thanks for the heads up.Shashahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05060820842775044512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1588051831069283523.post-56376878014982449122013-07-12T08:12:06.932+00:002013-07-12T08:12:06.932+00:00Great review. I still haven't been, despite hearing good things about this place so many times. I'll have to check it out.

It reminds me of some of the brilliant places near my neck of the woods (Whitechapel/Shadwell way) and some of the places further out near deepest East End. Such excellent value for money: I found a place near Whitechapel the other day which did perhaps the best dal we'd ever had along with two brilliant curries, salad and rice for under a tenner. Amazing.

C
http://www.slightlypeckish.co.ukChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08372255059528355207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1588051831069283523.post-1778598821702651562013-07-10T11:49:40.800+00:002013-07-10T11:49:40.800+00:00Believe it or not, they've recently put their ...Believe it or not, they've recently put their prices up too.
