London Restaurant Map 2012 v2 (now with added Zone 2)

IMAGE REMOVED BY REQUEST OF TRANSPORT FOR LONDON
After many requests, and thanks to everyone who gave feedback on version 1, I've managed to find the time to expand to Zone 2. If you click on the image above you can find the large-scale version.

I didn't make too many changes to the Zone 1 section; shifted a couple of bits around and added Draft House to the Tower Hill Gateway stop. I really was concentrating on doing a first full version including Zone 2 and hopefully by V3 I'll be able to make some major revisions to both zones.

I knew the expansion to Zone 2 would be tricky, but blimey I don't envy anyone who lives in the Docklands or near Willesden Junction - there really are slim restaurant pickings round those parts.

Anyway, hope you enjoy, and as before, all feedback welcome for the next version - most likely this time next year...

EDIT 7th February 2013: Yesterday I received an email from Eversheds LLP, lawyers for Transport for London, asking me to take the map down.

So, not having the time or money to fight anyone in court, I've just done as they've asked. Oh well, was fun while it lasted.

Are some stations purposefully restaurant-less: Holland Park, Sands End?

Looks fab, what a great idea. Can't wait to see zone 3!

Went in search of Le Wei Xiang (in Lewisham ) but I believe it's been knocked down - drove up and down the street several times before we decided this! Would be happy to be told otherwise...

Great map Chris!

Some suggestions:

Bethnal Green, perhaps Viajante?

Brixton, surely Honest Burger have now taken top trumps from Francos?

Haggerston, Sebright is closer to Bethnal Green than Haggerston although would be great to sneak Lucky Chip in somewhere! How about somewhere on Broadway? Would recommend L'Eau a La Bouche and Market Cafe!

Think the Jose/Brindisa options should be switched as Brindisa closer to London Bridge.

A strerling effort. For Deptford Bridge I can recommend Le Gia as another option to Panda Panda. Am sure others have Deptford Bridge vietnamese favourites too.

East India DLR must be a desperate place for Feng Sushi to be its representative...

Nice work. You'll have to find something to replace Sushi of Shiori though, as it closed last Wednesday to relocate to Bayswater.

Kennington = The Tommyfield?! Far better (and closer) would be Brasserie Toulouse Latrec or, if your feeling flush/special occasion, The Lobster Pot. Much better IMHO

Great job, saving it on my phone for emergencies! :)

This is an excellent idea, thanks for taking the time for putting it up! But for Kilburn, the Betsy Smith is absolutely terrible compared to Ekin (Turkish grill), Vijay's (South Indian) or Angeles (Sichuan). If there is a chance for South Hampstead, would suggest Atari-Ya, awesome sushi, rather than Singapore Garden.

Anon (both of you): Thanks V much for suggestions, will put them up in the next version!

Ally Smith: Have switched Jose & Brindisa, thanks for that. Not changing Bethnal Green, Haggerston or Brixton though I'm afraid - Gourmet San is ace, Sebright isn't THAT far from Haggerston and Franco Manca Brixton is WAY better than Honest Burger :)

This is a BRILLIANT idea! Saving the picture right now!

This is bleepin' awesome - I am happy to see that there is an approved eatery just one stop away from my decrepit area of residence, Turnpike Lane...

Thanks for this!

Ahhh love this. Potentially could have The Orange as a less formal option than The Goring? Also maybe if you didn't want chains in Westfield the Patio Polish restaurant on Goldhawk Rd, Shepherd's Bush could be an option! I look forward to zone 3...

This is fantastic! Can anyone recommend somewhere for lunch either Waterloo or Westminster for my wife's birthday (she's 6 months pregnant) and we have a 2 year old so has to be comfortable and child-friendly.

For Holland Park, I would suggest Chakra (okay it may be a touch closer to NHK but it is very good).

You could add the following to Brockley Rock (both closer to/right on top of Brockley station and with actual seats):

The Gantry
The Orchard

toodle pip :)

Well done lads! Thrilled to see Patio and the Princess Vic repping west London but whoever put the Thatched House on there needs shooting.

Very cool and some good choices. Though I'm suprised you haven't included the best Chinese + Japanese + Spanish restaurants in London: Yauatcha, Roka, and Finos!

What a fab idea! I love it! And so many of my favourite restaurants appear... My friend is a bit sad that Tufnell Park, where he is, gets Chicken Shop as it's entry. You ought to try The Junction Tavern and update :) x

Michael Nadre is in Chiswick (Turnham Green) so a bit of a walk from the Northern line.

Love it! Totally agree with all your selections - its as if you read my mind. And interesting to see some restaurants I dont know.

Great map!

I work in Canary Wharf and can definitely say that there is absolutely nothing near East India station, other than a friendly little cafe near the council offices. I'll grab the name next time I'm round there. And will definitely give Sichuan Kitchen a try, especially with the £6 lunch specials. Would rather do that than the slop on offer from Wasabi!

Shouldn't Brixton be Franco Manca?

For Pimlico you've put Tinello. I wondered why I'd never heard of it and when I searched for it I can see why. It's ~150m from Sloane Square tube but over 1km from Pimlico tube.

The Chinese restaurant in Lewisham is now called Taste Inn. V good, especially the tripe dishes. Taste of Lewisham opposite good Sri Lanken and v cheap.

My friend forwarded this to me but random question - any plans for an app?

I thought the map was protected under copyright. How did you get approval to do this?

Sands End is not a station, it's a restaurant near Imperial Wharf (the station).

joellybaby said...

@MrNoodles @Grovester I used to work round East India, agree, there's a serious dearth of lunch options!

One good one is Fat Boys Diner in Trinity Buoy Wharf - classic American diner, all stainless steel and red leatherette. Looks very cool and gets used in photoshoots all the time, and the burgers and shakes are good.

I'd swap Coq d'Argent (closer to Cannon Street than Mansion House) and Taberna Etrusca (just up Bow Lane from Mansion House and further from Cannon Street)...but good effort.

Thanks to this map we treated someone special to a dinner in Tinello and it was FANTASTIC! Very grateful! :)

Fantastic job around Shepherds bush and Hammersmith, but Stockwell has got to be Rebatos. please go

Glad to see no Gordon Ramsay restaurants included. Not worth it anymore.

Love this! If you extend to Honor Oak Park, I do hope you'll include Babur - best curry-house in London (Zagat 2013 and I reckon, anyway!): http://www.babur.info/

I would definitely recommend Bombay Brasserie at Gloucester road. Much better than the current suggestion.

Great blog! Here are a few suggestions for NW6:
- Kilburn = Small & Beautiful
- Brondesbury Arianna II is all right but I would also suggest Spicy Basil (great Thai food!)
- Kilburn High Road (overground) = Little Bay

I also have a blog about London - check it out if you have a min!

and on and on: Yeah good point. Have switched them.

Love this! But for ultimate tube-like realism why not put it into an Underground style font? A free one here... http://www.fontspace.com/jonathan-paterson/london-tube

The Dock Kitchen is wrong for Ladbroke Grove, we have The Ledbury, 2 Michelin Star restaurant, one of the top 50 restaurants in the entire world. The Dock Kitchen indeed! LOL

If you extend to zone 3, please put Mousaka at Ealing Broadway! Great greek food (whitebait to die for!).

Ah this is brilliant thank you, I live in Bow and am never really sure if there's anywhere nearby that is worth checking out...well except from the Greedy Cow, it should really get more attention then it does.

Great map and idea! When your next in WIllesden Green try and visit the small and unassuming Pomegranate. The thai stir fries are delicious! Also Abi Ruichi in Stoke Newington is so much better than Rasa and The Britannia Fish & Chip Shop on Grove Road is great.

Great to see Dotori (Finsbury Pk.) and Antepliler (Manor House) make it into the zone 2 version. Can you make a higher res version so I can use it as my desktop. Thanks!

LOVE this! I've shown this to anyone and everyone I know. Brilliant brilliant.

Anchor and Hope - great choice but it's not really Lambeth North. Have you ever tried the Three Stags? Superb food.

Anonymous said...

For Belsize Park, does Oliver's refer to Oliver's Village Cafe in Belsize Village (great breakfasts & cake) or Oliver's fish & chip shop? both are great in their own ways - just out of interest!

Anonymous said...

FAT BOYS DINER IS A 10 MINUTE WALK FROM EAST INDIA DLR STATION BUT DEFINITELY THE BEST PLACE TO GO IN THAT AREA. IT IS AN ORIGINAL 1940'S AMERICAN DINER & IT'S ALONGSIDE THE RIVER JUST BY LONDON'S ONLY LIGHTHOUSE.

Anonymous said...

Elliots, Borough Market, (London Bridge) certainly a sure fire winner over Brindisa for 2013.....

Anonymous said...

Hedone is actually closer to Chiswick Park tube, so I would say Le Vascherin or La Trompette for Turnham Green...

Slow hand clap, TfL. What soulless behaviour.

Wow. I don't want to know how many companies are using the tube map without license and they are going after a random blog...

TC said...

The problem is, some heartless soul who doesn't care much for Tfl could feasibly upload the map to an image hosting service for all to enjoy. You would be powerless to remove it, as would Tfl. That would be awful.

Party poopers @ TFL.

At work we've printed the map out and are working our way around the stops. Rebels.

Dave said...

How pathetic are TfL? If only they put so much effort into their service delivery.

Keep up the good work CaB - we have also printed it. I wonder if TfL will break in the office and tear it up?!

Anonymous said...

So glad I downloaded and printed mine... tfl map should be a public good!
thank you for your wonderful work!
perhaps we can come up with an alternative way to share your guide.
there is a rounded map of the Tube, re-designed by someone - I wonder if that's too subject of tfl copy rights.

Taylah Amos said...

I was just looking for the map but it was already removed? That’s just sad. It’s a good thing that you still had fun despite of that.
